NJHEPS High Performance Campus Design Guidelines

With the support of the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and the help of the Bill Bobenhausen (Sustainable Design Collaborative), NJHEPS Green Design Writing Team, and NJHEPS Staff, NJHEPS produced a two-volume guide to green/sustainable design for New Jersey higher education institutions, the High Performance Campus Design Handbook. Volume I serves as an overview of green design, establishing a rationale for its use and sketching the New Jersey higher education context. Volume II serves as a technical guide for planners, designers, and facilities personnel.

Volume I of the High Performance Campus Design Handbook is available for all to download and view. You may also order a printed, bound copy for $10 from Terra Meierdierck.

Volume II is available online for New Jersey higher education faculty/staff with limited access. Please contact Terra Meierdierck (973.642.7848) for access or to order a printed copy for $20.

Nation's first Hydrogen home in NJ

The first solar-hydrogen residence in North America has been completed in Hopewell, NJ. This major milestone in the development of the sustainable-resource economy will be demonstrated to invited guests at a dedication ceremony on Friday, October 20th. The home features an advanced residential solar-hydrogen fuel-cell storage and generation system that converts energy between electricity and hydrogen. This hydrogen production, storage, and fueling capability has been integrated into an existing solar and geothermal system at the home of Michael Strizki. Mr. Strizki has also played a key role in the project's advancement.

The Solar-Hydrogen residence is an initiative of The Hopewell Project. Development of the Solar-Hydrogen Residence is an ongoing collaboration of government, industry, and private citizens. Major funding for this project has been provided by a grant from the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU). Part of a statewide clean energy initiative, the objective of the NJBPU Clean Energy.

A HOGEN Regenerator, manufactured by the Proton Energy Systems, a subsidiary of Distributed Energy Systems Corp. (NASDAQ: DESC), is being used to make the system's hydrogen. "This is exactly the kind of groundbreaking project that demonstrates quite compellingly the emerging practicality of renewable energy technology," said Rob Friedland, Sr. Vice President for Proton's Hydrogen Technology Group. "Our successful collaboration with Renewable Energy International, Mike Strizki, Advanced Solar and the State of New Jersey enables us to prove that generating hydrogen using Proton's PEM electrolysis hydrogen generation can significantly reduce the production of greenhouse gas emissions in real world applications."
The system also incorporates fuel cells manufactured by Plug Power, battery banks manufactured by Exide Technologies, and direct-coupling lighting gateways manufactured by Nextek Power Systems. Invaluable consulting services were provided by Bob Davidson of Davidson Code Concepts.
