Power Shift was a national conference organized by the Energy Action Coalition that brought together over 10,000 students from around the country to Washington D.C’s convention center from April 15-18th. Power Shift’s main goal was to get campuses and communities to come together to talk about clean energy and our concern about the environment. There were a number of inspirational speakers such as Bill Mckibben and Al Gore who encouraged us to take a stand and that this is our moment to unite to set things right. The theme of the entire weekend seemed to be that “every generation needs a revolution.”

Ever since I’ve come back from this conference I’ve been staying in contact with other state coordinators around the north eastern region and they are organizing and networking and educating their peers. It’s important to create a support system. We understand that if we want to shift the power then we have to shift the paradigms.

I had the privilege of representing New Jersey and facilitated a state break out session where many colleges and universities from the state came together for an open discussion on how we can come up with the solutions and create the network that we desperately need. The state of NJ now has a facebook page called, New Jersey Sustainable Collegiate Partners, where colleges will be posting events from their schools and participating in discussions and giving advice to schools that need it. Students from around NJ have also begun planning a NJ Powershift with the help of members of the Energy Action Coalition and NJHEPS. We hope to recreate the excitement and inspiration that we all experienced at our NJ Power Shift Halloween event taking place October 29th and 30th at Stockton College!  We have an action packed schedule that promises to be a fabulous event.

We are going to need to make a lot of sacrifices for this movement to work. The men and women of our history have sacrificed and fearlessly stood up for what they believed was justifiably right, we must do the same. They started our revolution, now is the time to start ours. Power Shift was an amazing experience that we will never forget. It was the event that brought the youth leaders of America together, and is the catalyst of the social movement that is already here.
