There are five goals with twenty-two overall objectives for NJHEPS’ second five years of development. Each objective is designed to allow for flexibility in activity design, and for multiple methods of measuring and reporting on accomplishments.
Goal A: To advance sustainability through facilitating communication and disseminating knowledge and information from and to the various constituencies of NJHEPS.
Objectives:
- Wide dissemination of newsletter, curriculum materials, reports on projects, and overall success indicators in a consistent, high quality fashion.
- Increase the number of participating individuals or institutions in the network to 20% of total population.
- Identify and disseminate information about "best practices" in a user- friendly, detailed fashion to allow for replication, especially using NJHEPS member institutions as focus.
- To try creative uses of electronic technology for creating partnerships, sharing information, working in virtual communities of practice, recruiting and retaining volunteers, and promoting active participation in NJHEPS activities and projects.
GOAL B: To develop the understanding of sustainability among the wide spectrum of NJHEPS constituencies as well as other individuals and groups of similar values and goals. Objectives:
- Undergraduate courses (or the equivalents) in more NJHEPS member institutions address sustainability from a systems approach in at least 4 courses of study (such as buisness, economics, environmental science, engineering, food science, history, anthropology, chemistry, and architecture).
- Creation of curriculum materials by expert faculty focused on interdisciplinary problem-solving of New Jersey-specific issues studied in a global context, to be used in more NJHEPS member institutions.
- Offer opportunities for faculty development through Summer Institutes each year.
- Creation of Sustainability Sabbaticals for faculty to undertake course development, research on sustainability, and/or leading NJHEPS projects as technical experts.
- Creation of fellowships and assistantships to train future sustainability professionals.
- Creation of undergraduate majors (or academic curriculum programs of study) with significant enrollments in sustainability areas.
- Work with existing programs to involve sustainability training for all field placements of students (e.g., community service, internships, field research courses, etc.)
- Help promote sustainability concepts at graduate buisness schools, law schools, medical schools and other graduate professional programs.
GOAL C: To promote partnerships for advancing sustainability among the wide spectrum of NJHEPS constituencies as well as other individuals and groups of similar values and goals. Objectives:
- Regular active participation of NJHEPS with state, regional and national organizations with similar values and work.
- Seek active participation of the government, nonprofit and corporate sectors of NJ in sustainability activities through development of an interdisciplinary, diverse NJHEPS Advisory Board.
GOAL D: To increase capacity for the practice of sustainability on campus and among NJHEPS constituencies, through building skills, transforming attitudes, and providing resources.
- Assist in support of student sustainability organizations on all 42 campuses.
- Establish on NJHEPS campuses the norms, values and organization culture which supports and rewards faculty, staff and student interdisciplinary collaborations in areas of sustainability education and research, and operational practices.
- Establish broad-based agreement and agenda among the higher education community within New Jersey about sustainability operations and practices with commitments for performance, through the Presidents’ Council.
- Expand the use of technical teams to assist operation projects on campuses to change campus practices and broaden impacts of collaboration, using the National Wildlife Federation's State of the Campus Environment criteria to evaluate success.
