    NJHEPS Climate Change Working Group

    CE Icon

    June 12, 2007 9 AM - 2 PM

Climate change has been described as the most important societal issue of the 21st century, and a major threat to New Jersey's economy and environment. As Dr. Don Farish, President of Rowan University recently said, "Colleges and Universities, in many cases, are like small cities. We have a responsibility to address the issue of global warming both in our curriculum as well as in our practices. We must lead by example."

Dr. Farish is one of over 270 presidents to sign the American College &amp University Presidents Climate Commitment (PCC). The Presidents of Rider University and the College of New Jersey have also recently signed on for this commitment, and several others are in the approval process. Just today, the 4th of June, the New Jersey Presidents Council ( the presidents of the 58 degree-granting institutions in New Jersey) passed unanimously a resolution recommending "...that all New Jersey presidents of higher education institutions seriously consider signing the national Presidents Climate Commitment within the coming months, in light of New Jersey higher Education's long-standing commitment to combating the threat of global warming (as evidenced by the prior NJPC prior commitment in 2001 to reduce greenhouse emissions) and the stated goal of the State of New Jersey to reduce GHG emissions back to 1990 levels by 2020 and by 80% by 2050."

By signing the PCC pledge, a President commits to develop a comprehensive plan to achieve climate neutrality as soon as possible for their campus. Climate neutrality is achieved when an organization reduces its carbon emissions as low as possible and then institutes initiatives that offset the remaining emissions, such as purchasing renewable energy.

NJHEPS stands ready to support New Jersey Presidents who wish to sign and implement the PCC by announcing the establishment of a NJHEPS Climate Change Working Group that will assist NJ institutions in conducting an inventory of greenhouse gas emissions and developing an institutional action plan within the next two years to adopt new policies and procedures that will reduce carbon emissions and save energy and operating costs. This working group will discuss and prepare guidance documents on how to conduct inventories and prepare climate-neutral plans in the most efficient and cost-effective manner over the coming months.

The first meeting of the NJHEPS Climate Change Working Group will take place on the 12th of June (see information below), and we hope you can attend and learn how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at you school.
