The Ramapo College Masters Program in Sustainable Studies is presenting "Lessons of Sustainability: the Expert Practitioners Series" featuring speaker Trent Schroyer, Ph.D. Professor at Ramapo College.

He will discuss the ideas of Ivan Illich, who was a social critic and was prophetic in his independent and catalytic recognition of the problems of sustainability and disabling institutions in the 1970 & 80's. But thereafter his work is not widely known and was a vastly different approach based on a self critique of his earlier work. This second phase was unique in its focus on the history of the body, the disembodiments of sensibility and the misplaced concreteness of scientific constructs (such as 'development', 'life', 'energy') that conceal pathologies and block autonomous learning. Trent Schroyer will develop some of the implications of
Illich's approach by discussing social autism , autistic economics and new ideas of enlivenment learning emerging from the international commons movement.

Schroyer has also authored and edited key works on sustainability, including A World That Works: Building Blocks for a Just & Sustainable Society (Rowman Littlefield 1997), Creating a Sustainable World: Past Experience/future Struggle (Rowman Littlefield 2006) and Beyond Western Economics: Remembering Other Economic Cultures (Economics as Social Theory) (Routledge 2009).
