Shabazz Jackson and Josephine Papagni "Zero Waste: A Permaculture Perspective on Waste Management"

  • 04 Apr 2013
  • Ramapo College of New Jersey, Friends Hall.
Shabazz Jackson and Josephine Papagni have worked to unite the concepts of permaculture and zero waste. In their work, materials are recovered and cycled back into use. And, where possible, their use is targeted to restore and enhance public environments. Their goal, however, is not only to cycle waste material into products of use to home and community, but to look at the social changes required to implement changed behaviors toward consumption and waste, developing techniques to create that desired social change.

Even though they have had a tremendous impact in helping communities achieve "zero waste," their interest is in the
community, not just the waste stream. Shabazz Jackson is Founder and President of Greenway Environmental Services, Josephne
Papgni is Vice-President of this minority and women owned business. Building on concepts developed while working on materials recovery for Beacon New York, they have become
leaders in organic waste cycling, generating an extensive array of organic gardening and land management materials from compost. Based on principles of permaculture, they have been
able to achieve a dramatic reduction to waste streams while enabling sustainable land management and food systems.

Their model program in Poughkeepsie, New York, began with
work at Vassar College and has grown to address materials produced by three colleges in the city. They have developed the ability, not just to talk about, but to achieve zero waste systems.
In their lecture, this husband and wife team will showcase their approach and the principles that underlie it. They will then discuss several cases studies that apply these principles. These
include applications to homesteads, college and community practices and instituting municipal zero waste programs.
