Campus Sustainability
Selected Indicators Snapshot and Guide
Disclaimer:
In the attached pages, we have developed a
set of "indicators" which offer a yardstick on how we can
improve performance toward sustainability. These
"indicators" are not mutually exclusive, neither are they
exhaustive of all the possible criteria by which an
institutions performance could conceivably be
measured. Responses to this exercise are necessarily an
approximation only and will serve as a diagnostic tool. Here
are some central themes from our list:
Indicators:
Solid Waste. Can we further
reduce, re-use or recycle the material we "throw away" on
campus?
Energy.
How can energy conservation be
better employed in lighting, HVAC and other power needs?
Water/Sewage. Can we better manage
the way water is consumed and sewage generated?
Transportation. Motor vehicles are
major contributors to pollution. Can we find workable
alternatives?
Indoor Air
Quality. How can buildings best be maintained and equipped
without degrading indoor air?
Landscape. Do
monoculture lawns and the fight against pests put our health
and ecosystem at risk?
Food
Service. In feeding our community do we take into account
the way in which food is served?
New
Structures/Renovations. Can we better
distinguish the trade-off between construction and
operation?
Procurement. Can
purchasing contracts be better devised to elicit the support
of the business community?
Curriculum.
Is "sustainability" sufficiently
and thoroughly integrated into the aggregate of our
curricula?
Instructions:
1) Using the attached Snapshot
and Guide, please rate your institutions level
of sustainability according to the selected indicators. When
completed, the Snapshot, will provide a brief
summary, or glimpse of your institutions performance.
Please fill out the snapshot guide after you have
reviewed the subsequent questions listed in the
snapshot guide worksheeeets. Once the Snapshot sheet
has been completed, please indicate in the space provided a
"Rank of Priority" for those indicators over which you may
be able to affect the most immediate and easily realizable
change.
2) Referring to your "Rank of Priority"
on the Snapshot sheet, select the page in the
Guide which corresponds to your greatest ranked
indicator and provide the requested information. With time
allowing, and after we have realized some initially
measurable success, will work with you to complete
subsequent pages from the Guide as indicators for joint
future activity.
3) Please complete the "General
Information" page in the Guide.
Thank you in advance for your participation in this
effort.
