Campus Sustainability Snapshot

Welcome to the "Campus Sustainability Selected Indicators Snapshot and Guide." This is an instrument we have developed for assessing sustainability at an institutional level.

This assessment instrument accepts the widely-held view that "sustainability" is the fulfillment of our present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. With this in mind, we have selected ten areas to assess that have large potential impacts on sustainability, depending on an institution's choices.

Going through this assessment process can help those interested in advancing sustainability at your campus to hone in on areas for future efforts. NJHEPS is eager to work with your institution to improve your campus' performance in any or all of these indicators.

Please contact us if you use this Campus Sustainability Snapshot assessment tool, or would like further guidance on any aspect of campus sustainability assessment. We urge all campuses to systematically and accurate measure progress towards sustainability. Like Shroedinger's cat, the very process of measuring campus sustainability has great potential to change reality for the better, as your campus community learns about current impacts, investigates options, and formulates plans for improvement. The best of intentions is no substitute for demonstrable progress -- progress that each year grows increasingly easy to make and grows increasingly essential to the health and welfare of our world.
